Climate control problem

I have an 85 300TDT, my problem is that the climate control only seems to work in defrost or high fan. When in auto mode it does not work at all and the low fan does not work. I have replaced the CCU dash controls with a salvaged one (in very good condition), no change. There has been an intermittent clicking noise behind the glove compartment. I have also replaced all the old fuses with new ones. Strangely it will start to work normally for no apparent reason and may run that way for a few hours.
Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I do know there is some kind of climate control amplifier this is below and behind the glove box. Can you go back and get that part from the parts car you got the control unit from? I'd try that. Also, unless you are good with electronics and can test/resolder the climate control board, you can't be sure its working properly.

There is a temperature controller behind the glove box. I have attached a pic of it. The symptoms on mine (with a new climate control pushbutton unit) were as follows:
When I would go from off to economy nothing would happen. I could press any of the other buttons (pulling in the compressor) and then go back to the economy button and it would then stay on. I found a used one and put in there. Works as well as it is designed to.

Thanks!

I'll check out the relay - the picture really helps. Actually I did check out the first climate control unit with a VOM and re-soldered a few suspect joints without success that's when I got the other unit thinking that if it was the CCU it would at least exhibit some other problem. After changing and having the exact same symptoms (especially with the clattering relay) I thought I'd appeal here for assistance. Thanks!
