About once every few months, after parking after an hour, cant get car started. Cranks, even starter fluid n/g. If I wait about another i/2 hour, it will start right up. Any suggestons amoung the 1977 sl mavins? Thanks, lots, for any help. Abe G PS car runs well otherwise, good idle, slightly rich., poor gas milage.

leaky fuel injectors
my 88 560 SL with 100k miles does the same thing. if the injectors leak out the fuel in the system, when hot the increased pressure in the system drives the fuel out of the system, requiring a bit more cranking to get the injector prossure back up. I usually give it about 1/4 throttle, and it starts right up.
this is a bad situation to let go. i confirmed it when i changed the plugs out and they all smell heavily of fresh gasoline when pulled out 20 minutes after shutdown. all that extra gas is either soaking ontop of the intake valves and boiling off leaving varnish and gummy crud, or it is ending up on top of the piston doing the same, or worse leaking down the side and washing oil from the cylinder walls and drying or gummin up the rings. this should be addresses of you can confirm the leaking by a smell / look test or watching the fuel pressure fall with a gauge after shutdown. |

1977 450sl hard start after run sometimes!
The minute the flatbed delivered the m/b to the ship, it started at once, one turn of key! 2 days in shop, all sorts of test,s starts each time one key turn! frustrating!! Problem is it stuck my wife 2 days in row with no start after run! Last time this happened was a year ago, otherwise car runs wel. It looks like it starts after about one hour cool down whenever this happens. Your suggestion appreciated Abe G PS no obvious gas smell or leak fuel prressure checks ok

well your questions came almost before you checked
anything. if you used starter fluid while cranking and it had no effect then it points directly to a no spark condition. so do you or don't you have spark at the time of no start?? got spark from the coil? dist cap and rotor ok? i'm betting on the control unit. george |

Had this on a 380SEL it was corrosion (severe) in the coil at the high tension tower. New coil and wire, problem solved. It is worth checking.
