Bought from Ebay $2,000 84 300D with 197,000 showing on the odometer. Engine and trans seem ok as well as the interior but I found out the car must have been from somewhere it snows; rust problems under the chassie. (I live in Southren CA and the car is a Fed car.) A/C and such also not working only the fan and heater. I still think that the car was worth the $2,000. It was road worthy after a brake job and throttle linkage adjustment. About 3 months after buying the car I rebuilt the injectors which smoothed out the idle.
I am trying to go all diesel. Had a great running, and good fuel mileage 92 Olds that ran afowl with too must NOX on the smog test. No abnormal computer codes; nothing I tested or replaced helped. Tested and failed the smog test X2. I could not find out what is wrong without buying a engine analyzer or paying some one to fix it. On the 3rd smog test the tech. told me CA has a vehicle turn in program where if you qualify they give you money to retire your car (junk). I did that, I qualified and was paid $1,000 for the car (I used the money in part to pay for the mercedes).
I still hated to geat rid of (the wife's car) a good running car!
I have been driving a Diesel Volvo (After overhauling the long block) for 9 years and had few problems during that time and no smog test. So, I thought that going all diesel would be the answer for me.

Paid $1450 for a 1983 300SD, 206,000 miles. Smooth engine, rust-free body, good but dirty interior. New vacuum lines, manual fuel pump, battery, tires, and Pioneer stereo. Needs shocks. Has electrical and leak issues.

I just got my 300TD and paid $3500 for it. It looks good and the engine and suspension appear to be in excelent condition. My main problem is that it leaks like a seive when it rains. I'll be putting all new seals in it.

This is my first diesel. I'm really excited about it. I used to operate diesel tractors and heavy equipment and always loved the sound of a diesel engine.

77 300d

I paid $1450 bucks for my 77 300D about 5 days ago. I can't tell you yet whether it was a good deal, other than it runs well, and appears to have
very little issues. Only noticed leaking fuel injector hoses (seemingly common) and my temp gauge does not work. Other than that, all badges and hardware are intact, starts and runs, and drives fine. Car has 410,000 miles. Not sure if it has been rebuilt. Even the sunroof motor works..!! And the famously messed up window switches and door locks of my BMW days don't seem to have happened, at least to this car.

$2500-3000

My '83 300D was $3000 in 2005 with 292k miles on clock and good running shape.

My '78 280CE was $2500 in May this year with 53k miles on clock and excellent running condition - replaced CC Servo with machined one and now near perfect DD.

My newly acquired Euro '89 190E 5-spd was $2500 in October with 112k Km (about 68k miles) and is a joy to drive on the Autobahn (I feel so lucky!). So far haven't been up past 160km/h yet, but next long trip I'll see what it will do.

I would like to get back to the states and find a W124 diesel wagon as my next MB.

John

95 E320 Wagon $5500

Kind of late posting this... wanted to get my hands around the car before posting. I got the car in June with 139k on the clock (now 146k), smoke silver with MB-tex in nice condition. So far I have :

replaced fan blade $50
replaced brake pads and hoses $200
replaced all fluids and filters $150
replaced waterpump and belt $250
replaced radio & speakers (Blaupunkt London) $200
replaced plugs and connectors $60
cleaned out the EGR tube - FREE!!!

It still needs accumulators and idles slow ~500 rpm but smooth. This was probably not the deal of the century but It is fun to drive and usually fun to work on.

We got this car for me to drive and shake down over the summer and then give to our 16 year old son (who needs a wagon to carry his double bass). But now I think he likes the mini-van better whether he knows it or not.

I paid $2,400 for a 220D in 1999 with unknown miles. Have dumped in about 10K in repairs since. I'm now poor but it was worth every penny. Funny how love overrules brains.

Wow! It certainly seems like a little bit of everything out there! My first adventure was a 1980 300sD. Grey with 270K on it. Experimented with a kit from grease car. $600 for the car, $80 for The kit. Ran great for about a year -6K mi Then slowly downhill. Put exhaust and alternator in. Could use radiator, battery and possibly a home. think I'm hooked, however.
2nd purchase was a 1985 300TD with 385K that I paid $1300 for in January. Looks great, 3rd seat, rms good, cd, sunroof, roof rack, hitch. All a guy could ask for but floors! she's hanging in, however. Put rear brakes and a starter in so far. I consider them both good deals! Hope you find one too.
