my gas gauge does it every once and a while and so does my oil any ideas why

Low voltage from alternator, tired battery, or overvoltage relay bad.

how can i check these

Hi Benzman,
It could be a faulty oil temperature sensor, or it could be a bad ground at the instrument cluster. BTW, the ground is connected to the chasis, usually brown(color) behind the instrument cluster. |

To do a quick check - conncet a voltmeter to the battery terminals. You should see at least 13.5 volts with the engine running.
