What is this thingy? (w124)

In my pursuit of finding the reason for my cabin heating issues, decribed in this thread, i was looking for the little fan pulling air from the roof console down to a sensor allegedly placed behind the glove box. -But i did not find it!
Instead i came across a strange 'plastic piston'. Can anyone tell me what on earth this is..?

Here you can see the placement of the piston.

Jeez.. I just went out to the car again, and it sort of came to me.. It's the damping device for the glove box 'door'..!

But the flimsy little plastic chain was broken so i didn't see right away where it was supposed to attach.
Sorry for wasting your time..

Btw. Can anyone point me to that little fan and cabin temp. sensor there's supoosed to be in there?

The fan and rotten tubing is down by the heater box -- look below the opposite corner of the glove box.
