| Exterior Temerature Gauge

Hi, What can I do to check if the exterior temp Gauge on my 1986 560SL is working? Someone cut the wire that goes to the sensor behind the front license plate If the gauge works than I would have the incentive to rewire. Thanks, Monty

Monty: If the whole sensor is there (in other words BOTH sides of the wire, out to the sensor and in towards the interior) you can just strip the wires and twist them together and see if you get a display. If there in no reading, then the part in the dash may be bad. You'd need to get a resistance substitution box and dial in an appropriate resistance and see if there is then a reading on the gauge. If it checks out OK, then the sensor should be replaced. If there is still no reading, probably needs a gauge, plus it would probably be a good idea to replace the sensor as well, unless you want to try doing a proper repair to the cut wires. Gilly

On my 87 300e I discovered the outside temp sensor was cut off. Even though the cluster end of the sensor from my totalled 91 300e is not interchangeable, I cut the sensor end off the 91 300e & attached the wires to the same-colored leads on the 87 300e, expecting it would work. However, the lcd reads sporatically, and it only reads 125F when it shows anything. Did I do something wrong, or doesnt this work? Thanks.
