rattles

'97 C280, 130K miles, no rattles except items in car (cassets etc.) Car is flawless. Very low maintenance costs. Synthetic oil from new, changed every 5K miles. New brake pads @ 87K miles. New tires of course. If and when car wears out will purchase another as long as there are no Chrysler parts in it.

The 87 has around 200k on the odometer and rattles a lot. Really too much for my taste. It's never been wrecked by the way. So this month I replaced all the rear and front suspension parts that I could including new springs. Well, it still rattles. The rear seat, the passenger seat, the sun roof headliner, some rattling inside the doors.

I'm about sick of it. I rate it a 5.

MB rattles

Of course MB's rattle just like most cars. However if one spends sometime underneath the vehicle and uses wire, padding etc along with tightening everything in the interior that can be tightened AND adding insulation here and there, most rattles will go away. If this is too much work, buy a Honda. In general, they are good on keeping rattles to a minimum. A bigger problem, I think, is why are MB's so loud. They need to do some real "brain storming" to solve many of their problems lest the Japanise replace them as "the world class auto of the 2000's". Using Chrysler parts to save costs is probably not the way to go.

Thats true, especially speaking of the 80s and 90s models. Toyotas and Nissans of the 80s and 90s as well. The later models have seemed to decline however.

What still amazes me is that my OLD 69' Chevrolet Caprice is still 100% squeak and rattle free.

On the flip side, one of moms cars (97' Oldsmobile) is a rattle trap.

How about any "scrunching" sounds from the door panels?

My C230 has occasional creaks from the passenger front seat, but only when someone light in weight is sitting in it (?!). If I'm driving by myself, or if someone heavier than about 120 lbs. is sitting next to me, the seat's quiet. Springs, I guess?

Aside from that, I have the infrequent creak from the wooden paneling above the A/C, but only when the weather is cold; it goes away when the interior warms. There's also an occasional, almost inaudible rattle from the sunshade when I hit a ripple-bumpy patch of what is laughingly referred to in New Orleans as "pavement."

It still astonishes me how solid and composed this car is, after 85,000 miles of driving in this near-Third World city.

1986 420SEL- only squeeks from leather seats and sometimes brakes, especially in reverse.

mystery chirp

My 1990 560 sel with 146k has quite a few panel squeeks. If I think about it while I'm driving it will drive me nuts. Apparantly the bottoms of the door panels were designed just a tad too long and they rub on the door sills. I plan on tackling this issue when it warms up.

Also, I get an occassional chirp from the dash at certain speeds (around 45) drives me absolutely nuts!!!! The problem is very unpredictable and even seems to move from one spot to another as to make it virtually impossible to locate. I have tried many times to put my ear to the dash while driving but its difficult to locate. It's the main reason my wife doesnt drive my car. She calls it a POS when this happens...I have to remind her its 17 years old and I don't have a $520/month car note!

Except!!

If the rear cup holder is open and not in use, it makes a rattle that drives me NUTS. My daughter hops out and leaves the cup holder out all the time. Good for her she's so darned good otherwise...
Same here with the dash squeak. Had more rattles/squeaks before I had the motor mounts, belts and brakes done, after those where repaired- squeak and rattle free! She gets a 9. 1990 420 SEL.
