'96 W210 Spring Perches

I had my low mileage (75K) E320 into the dealer for a minor repair and they told me the front spring perches are separating from the car. They said the cost of this repair is about $1900. Does anyone know anything about this type of failure? I've heard there is a TSB on the subject and that I may have a chance of getting Mercedes Benz assistance. In the meantime, they wrong "this car is too dangerous to drive" all over the invoice and my wife (who drives it) won't drive it! HELP!
John

You could find yourself a really good welding shop & have them weld gussets ( re-enforcement plates ) onto the perches.
Yes, it is a critical part of the body structure & seperation is not unheard of.

I have heard of the problem in rust belt states.

From what I have heard it is a simple repair for a good welder. If close to failure they would be correct in the warnings they gave.

Yup, seen a few of them break up here in the rustbelt, but I sure didn't see any rust on the cars that they broke on. The first few I seen were on V8's-E420's. Heavier motor = more stress?
On the 201's I've seen break, now THAT was rust.
