Vacuum Modulator '95 E320
I've never done this but I want to try adjusting the modulator on my E320.
But I'm not sure how to remove the cap to get to the adjusting tee. Can it be pried off with a screwdriver? (tried that with a small amount of pressure and it didn't seem to want to come off that way). thanks for your help. |

Yes the cap just pops off. I am speaking of the rubber cap in the center, I would say roughly 1/2" in diameter and about 1/2" high.
It could be yours is heat cooked and hard. If so and it breaks or cracks you can use a tie-wrap or light wire to hold it in place until you can get a replacement. Haasman

Well, I got it off.
But when i pulled the little tee out I expected it to have some pressure on it (spring pressure) but it didnt seem to have any. Pulled out very easily. Does that sound normal? Anyway, I positioned it a couple of notches clockwise and put the cap back on. And maybe it helped the 2-3 flare a little...have to do some more testing. |

That is normal. The T is just like a little tool to turn the valve.
I presumed you serviced the trans etc. You may also want to look at the vacuum lines and especially the rubber connector to the modulator. The other item is the modulator itself. They do go bad. Did any ATF leak out when you took the cap off? You can also adjust the bowden cable to time when the shifts happen, ie early or later. It's adjuster is found up by the throttle valve under/near the air cleaner. Haasman

The cap covering the adjustment is different on the last models of 722.3 and 5 trannies. The cap is designed to be squeezed to remove on the plastic ones and usually is partially broken by prying. I keep spares and just replace them if they won't hold. There is no way top squeeze it properly with the trans installed.
You will probably need more than a couple flats of adjustment. Making it shift a little earlier with the cable adjustment will also help.

Thanks for the help.
The transmission now shifts, when under slight accelleration, very smoothly with no flair. I can still cause a bit of 2-3 flair if I left off the gas right at shift time but tomorrow I'll go a couple more notches clockwise and maybe that will eliminate it entirely. Allan |

Allan:
Did you ever completely eliminate the 2-3 flair by adjustment? Thanks. Brian
