purchaced a vega with a mercedes deisel and five speed, need to know how to identify year and model engine is from

It doesn't matter much what year it is as MB parts are designated by eng or chassis number.

The engine number is probably on the drivers side below the 3-4 glow plug. List it here and we may be able to tell you more about it.
