Emissions testing

If people think Connecticut has problems with it governor, the vehicle emmisions testing scandal was worse. Payoffs for valid stickers for years. We finally have a new testing program after being shut down for 1 1/2 years. I got my letter in the mail saying it is my turn to get tested. My EGR valve is triggering a Check engine light and is inoperable. Will it adversly affect my emmisions? Should I get it fixed first?

Part of most emission test procedures is to check the "check engine light". It should illuminate when the ignition is turned on, then go out after the engine is stated. If it stays on you will fail, so correct the cause for the check engine light before you are tested.

Some test procedures may also include a functional test of some kind for the EGR valve.

As long as the car is PRE-ODB2(before 1996) the check engine lamp must WORK & not be on durning the emission test!

Thanks guys. I've read about the probable causes and the speedo cable / drill trick from the searches I've done. I can't get the light to reset yet to see if it will come back on. The CE lightcame on during a morning start up when it was -4F in SE CT so I am a little suspicious of the EGR failure. I wonder if it was temp related.
