CL500 Lifter Flutter
In reviewing the maintenance report on a CL500 that we are looking at to buy from a Mercades dealer, an item listed was engine knock on cold start. In asking the dealer about this he indicated after "researching" the work that it was simply "lifter flutter" which he said is common on Mercedes 5.0 engines. The clatter supposedly occurs sometimes for a few seconds or so when starting a cold engine until oil is pumped into the lifters. Can anyone shed any light on this. The car is an '01, 10K miles, with 1 1/2 years of factory warranty left and then another year of Starmark warranty.

Seems fair enough.. especially if it goes away after a few seconds.
My '97 5-valve Audi had it while it was sitting around waiting to sell, went after a few seconds, stopped having it at all after a good 10 minute run. good luck Rusty
