How to track down hissing noise from engine

Hi guys

Last night I came home from work and left my 190E running in front of the house while I moved my other car out of the way so I can park the 190E in the garage. As I was walking back to the car I heard a hissing noise coming from the front end. I popped the hood and sure enough, something is hissing, but what?

I hope it is something attached to the V-Belt, but I was wondering if anyone has any techniques of figuring out what. I know I can take off the belt and start the car for a moment without it on to confirm this, but what to do next? I'll rotate everything and see if I can find the culprit, but at the rpms that I can spin the pumps and alternator to it wont sound the same as the 500 rpm produced by the engine.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

xp

Most of the time a hissing noise is a vacuum leak. Easiest way to find it is with starting fluid. Spray little shots near suspect points while it's running and when you find it, your RPM's will increase.

Not to sound like an a$$h***

But are you sure that it is coming from the engine? Verify that it is not the fuel pump underneath driver side rear door. These pumps are prone to hissing.

If not pump - then follow previous post advice!

Sometimes a short length of garden hose can be used as a stethoscope.

looks like head rebuild time....

Welp... I just got out of the garage, spent a good few minutes looking over the engine. I got an oil leak from the head gasket, and the valves are whats making the hissing sounds, but it is somewhat irregular, in any case, it looks like I should start thinking about a head gasket and head rebuild.

It will probably be pricey to do this, but I've gone as far as taking off the timing cover, additional steps would be taking detaching the intake mainfold and downpipe.

I think I can handle all that, but I still have to find a place where they will do a good job on the head and valves. Anyone know of a Place in Toronto or sourrounding area?

Any idea how much the head work would cost?

TIA

Do you have oil leaking from the head gasket or the valve cover gasket? My guess would be the latter. If so and it's leaking enough to hiss, check your PCV components.

it's below the downpipe, above it everything is clean. I can see the oil leaking down the engine block onto the steering damper and then onto the ground. I also think it might be squirting or getting onto the exhaust since every now and then some smoke comes up.

The valve cover seal is also brand new. In december I was rebuilding the front end and it was replaced.
