94 e420 transmission removal

I'm in the process of pulling the tranny to replace it with a used one. I have two problems.

1. Do I need to remove the entire driveshaft? Or will the front half of the shaft slip back far enough to get the flex disc out of the way? To remove the shaft I take it the exhaust my be removed.

2. I can't get the bolts out of the starter. They are the type that take a 10mm allen head socket. They wont break loose, I'm bending my rachet handle and neither will budge. I'm afraid of stripping the head of the bolt, then I will really have trouble. Any ideas?? Why would they be so tight?

Any other tips on this removal and install
