Crane Electronic Ignition Question?

With the Crane system (if put on a 73 or 74 450 SEL), do you replace the points and condensor?
My initial goal was to put a Pertronix setup in a spare 73 distrib.
that I don't even have the points and condensor in because the Pertronix unit replaces all of this. However, there is no stock Pertronix listed (have called them directly) for 2 distributors I have. The Crane unit (which I know has an external control box) is listed for 73-80 450 on the jc whitney site. However the same part no. is listed for many 47-85 American cars which leads me to
believe it may be just the box and that you must use the stock points and condensor. Anybody used this unit?
Also, having trouble finding replacement condensor and wire for 73-75 450 elec. injection cars (not at Fastlane or JCW).
Anyone have a source? Dealer item still?

As far as I know none of the Crane Cams systems use the points and condenser. The points are replaced with a sensor block and a shutter wheel is placed on the distributor shaft (over the lobes).

I have them installed on the Healey and the 280SL and have been quite happy with the system. (Earlier Crane Cams units had some problems, but Allison has corrected them and they seem pretty reliable.)

I use this setup in the 911. Works quite well, very stable. No condensor is needed and as stated above, the points are replaced by their optical or magnetic triggering set inside the distributor.

The unit often is sold to every car with the same number as there is only one part that matters to a particular car. That part is the shutter wheel that slips over the point cam to time and initiate the firing event. Many kits just put all wheels inside one kit.

thanks everyone- even tho it's slightly more expensive it seems like the Crane system would be easier to use on my application than trying to customize a Pertronix unit that might not even fit my distributor.

Hi

I'm a faithful user since the Alison days and I'm very happy with the product. The XR3000 model is the deluxe model that allows auto shutoff of the box when ignition is on but engine not started. This situation can burn out the coil or the transistor in the ignition box in a few minutes. The 3000 also allows you to use full 12V to the coil without ballast and for me it made a big difference with the new Bosch electronic ignition coil.

I bought mine from the Crane website at the garage sale page where returned units go at a discount. If there are none, write in and see of they have any.

I have used these units back to the Allison days also.

I don't know how much you all are spending but these units are really inexpensive. You can get them here on fastlane for 140, I pay significantly less, but I buy from the same source as fastlane comes from.

The part on fastlane can be found by looking up a 1976 Jaguar xj12. Pick engine electrical and then ignition conversion kit. There is a newer picture there than the one I saved a few years ago:
