unusual noise from door latch
I hear an unusual noise when I close the driver's doors on my 94 E320. In addition to the solid "thunk" there is a higer pitched "clunk". The same noise occurs occasionally when driving over a bump. I've tried lubricating the pivot point as suggested on page 326 of the E class Owner's Bible, but this did not cure the noise. Any sugestions?

Something is loose inside!
I was going to suggest the door strap but, since it also happens when you go over a bump...that is not a symptom. Are you sure it is coming from the door and not the suspension?

Kramlavud, how many driver's doors do you have on your E320? I'd suspect that the other noise is coming from the suspension too ... maybe a worn/shrunken bushing.

Yes, it is the door, not the suspension.

OK, time to be a little more precise. I hear the noise EVERYTIME I close the driver's side front door when I am sitting in the car. The same noise OCCASSIONALY re-occurs while driving over bumps. Hope that's clear.

With the door open, try smacking it hard with the heel of your hand, all round the perimeter, inside and out. It sounds like something is loose inside, so if you can duplicate the sound, that would confirm it.

Take a look at the driver's door outside mirror ... push the housing in both directions to check if there are any loose parts inside.

Re: unusual noise from door latch
Quote:
I had this - drove me crazy for about 2 years. Used to get the wife to drive occassionally and I would ride shotgun opening and closing the door whilst on the move - so I knew it was the door - but could I find out why.......................nope! So in desperation (coz it was driving me nuts) I tore up an old cigarette carton and fashioned it around the striker............and then slammed the freaken door closed. Drove off and .............silence. Stopped, open passenger door, removed cardboard, closed door and drove off and ..................silence. Been like that 2 years now and not a peep. Don;'t know what the exact problem was but hey who cares!! Good luck

This happened twice to me and both different problems. Drove me nuts both times. Both times it was a similar clicking sound when accelerating and braking. First one was a bad check strap that no amount of greasing can cure and the second was a door striker that was slightly out of centre. Easily cured by eyeballing when closing and realigning.
It was hard enough diagnosing the check strap so the second time, I happily bought a check strap only to have the noise persist. That second one was a killer to track down. Good Luck Oreo |
