weakened 123 control arm?

In the procces of replacing guide rod mounts and lower ball joints on a 123 as recommended by the good people.
Firstly the outer crust of the lower control arm has been shed which was at least 3mm thick due to all the hammering! just wondering if its strength would be compromised at all by this?
The brake backplate/disk dirt guard is also now hanging off, due to all the vibration, would I be recommended to bin it?
Thanks
