190D electromagnetic fan clutch

Hello,

The main electromagnet fan on my car has stopped working, I thought it was the three pole temp switch but upon further investigation found it wasn't (the fan wouldn't come on by jumping the connection). The fan clutch is getting 12v but there's no voltage going to the temp switch.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start looking?

Thanks,
Chris

Can you hear the clutch work when you supply 12v? I just had to replace the three-pole switch on the 190. I was told they often get higher and higher resistance over time.

Fan clutch

On top of the engine, next to the valve cover should be a sensor with one prong sticking out of it with a plug on it. If you unplug it while the engine is running, and short the plug end to ground, the fan should click in and start turning with the engine.

In my car, its the third sensor back, the front being one with two prongs, the middle has one prong but if I unplug it the engine slows down and almost dies, and the third one is the fan sensor - no effect on the engine when unplugged.

Try to short the wire to ground, if the fan runs, then its the sensor, otherwise trace the wire and see if that is the problem or the fan clutch itself.

Hope this helps.

update - fixed

I finally found out what the problem was. One of the wires had corroded at the connection to the fan clutch so no power went to the temp switch. It took me awhile to trace the wire from the temp switch, as it went into the wiring harness for the glow plugs six inches then turned around and went back out to the fan clutch. I resolderd the wire back into the connector, now the fan engages as it should when you jump the temp switch.

Thank you for your replies.
Chris
