300E intermittent surging/stalling/bad mpg solved!
The last few weeks my '86 w124 300E has been surging when accellerating from standstill and sometimes stalling. It also had very bad mpg.
I have had this problem before and my mechanic could only make it go away by replacing the intire injection system and "some relays" (mark that one!) This time the problem was intermittent, so i figured it had to be a bad electrical connection somewhere. -And it was! The OVP relay is always mentioned as a possible culprit. So the first thing i did was yank that out. I found the connectors (brass legs) to be covered in green powder from deteriorating brass. I polished the connectors with fine sandpaper and plugged the relay back in. -The car has been running like a dream ever since! ![]() Freestyler

Glad it is working now, but the sandpaper you used certainly removed the plated coating on the pins. They will now corrode much more quickly. Generally a pencil eraser used judiciously is about the most abrasive you can get away with. I'd get a spare OVP and keep it handy.

Wouldn't it be fair to assume that the mentioned coating is already more or less gone when the material is oxidizing heavily?
Could i use some of that 'electric grease' you see on the contact points inside switches to protect the pins? Freestyler

Dielectric grease, hydrophobic variety if there is a choice, would help. Although the pin plating may be worn through at contact areas, removing all or most of the remaining will greatly accelerate the accumulation of the corrosion salts. These can also cause shorts between pins.
