I would strongly urge you not to go ahead without the two little prongs from MB.
I've pulled my cluster. I bought a pack of replacement bulbs and I did the whole cluster (fuses included) with the tools. Remember too that you have to disconnect the speedometer cable from the tunnel area under the car aft of the transmission (near the front flex disc). The tools are used together to "wiggle" the cluster forward. They are precision made and are just the right size to "wiggle " that cluster forward. The tool is something like 30 bucks, that is from the dealership (I'm in Canada) and is about the same cost as the packet of bulbs and replacement fuses (the red one on the back of the cluster). It is cheap insurance since, if you press down too hard on the cluster and break the plastic cover glass, your gonna be out of pocket much more. Cheap outs are not worth it.... Best of luck in your repair. -Mike McKinney

I managed to do it the first time without the hooks, but I scractched the trim pieces on each side of it. The hooks are worth the money and I think it cost me less than $20 for both of them, but I don't remember for sure.
Good luck, |

Take the cover off under the dash on the drivers side. Stick you hand up to the back of the cluster and push it out from behind.
You can make the tool. I used a wire coat hanger. Bend the wire as desired and file the end of the wire smooth so you don't have any sharp edges that could cut the dash or cluster housing. It works fine in my 123s. Dave

or...
You can grind down the sides of 2 bicycle spokes on a bench grinder, making your own tool inexpensively. (Unless, of course, you have the spokes because your son rides freestyle BMX and you have to pay for the stitches, knees, teeth, CAT scans and doctor visits. I just considered the home made tools as a form of cost recovery.)

The easiest way on the 124 is to remove the left front speaker, reach down the hole and push the cluster out.
