using a brake caliper file

Can anyone briefly explain when one would use and how to use a brake caliper file? I've seen "brake caliper files" (with a handle) for upwards of $50. Isn't a caliper file nothing more than a standard rectangular, flat file with the "Swiss pattern" or criss-cross cut? Are they a certain length? I've heard of and used caliper brushes, but never files...

hi

i cannot believe a 50 dollar file could possibly be better than a good old 12 dollar nicolson. beside there is not much there to file is there? what would you want to file? maybe knock off some rust on the piston faces maybe?

got to be a gimmick

Never heard of such a tool, but I'm curious.
Google had one hit, with no more details offered.

I have used an ordinary flat file to clean up gouges on caliper slide rails, but most MB models have pads that glide on those nice built-in shims.

that file

I know that both Hazet and Kukko manufacture these "caliper files". I think you use them to "clean up" the brake caliper, after having used brake cleaner spray and a stiff wire brush, I guess you would "file down" a rough area of the caliper??? Don't know. Anyone?
