'91 300E wear sensors question

I was washing my car at the local carwash and as usual i cleaned all 4 calipers with the high pressure water nozzle. When i got in the car i noticed that the brake wear sensor light was on, I figured i knocked a sensor out of place (though i thought unlikely but possible),,, or that i shorted out a sensor.. So i took out all the sensors when i got home, and the brake sensor light still comes on ONLY when i apply the brake... What is wrong with the damn thing?

How is it possible that the light goes on only when i press the brake but there are no sensors to make the lights go on?? i took them all out!
