I have been adviced and confirmed by MB dealer that Dexron III ATF is te right stuff for my 87 300E. I'm not sure the other models should use the same.

Dextron III or similar since 1969, Type A before that, I belive.
Low tranny fluid will cause slippage from low operating pressure. Done long enough, this will remove the friction lining from the clutches and bands and cause permanent slippage, burned clutches, and metal fragment damage to the gears. If you didn't drive it long with the tranny slipping, I wouldn't worry about it. Checking the fluid is a pain on the 722.x trannies -- the dipstick drags fluid up one side that "wipes" onto the dispstick going back in. Best way to check is to pull the dipstick, wipe, then wait a minute or two for all the fluid to drain back down. You get a better idea that way. Peter Peter
