Hopefully the graying hair isn't my fault. Unfortunately I do not have another MB. I guess I will have to order another solenoid and make sure I get the washer this time.

The grey hair is from working on cars. I can send you the solenoid in the picture I posted, I know it works; if it works fo you send the new one back. I will need mine back when you get a new solenoid.

C32,

Thanks for the offer. I've gotten in good with the local MB parts guy so he usually rushes my orders for me at no charge....and also gives me 20% off list price.

My car doesn't do this everyday......seems to be intermittent. I'll have him order a new one for me today as well as the washer.

Thank you again,

I am only 27 but I expect my hair to be graying soon as well at this rate.

Have you found....

that this is affected by engine operating temp at all? I have an old 89 with the same engine tranny combo and precisely the same problem, but was thinking I had a defective tranny, mainly because it would only act goofy after a good long while of running. The unexplained downshift thing makes sense on the solenoid, but would it affect the upshifts? Help! Frustrated!....

C32,

Can you help? I had the MB dealer reorder both parts. Which one potentially went bad? and which of these is the solenoid? Believe it or not none of the parts guys know which one is either?? Thanks

The one with the three o-rings and nut is the kick down solenoid valve. If the car worked for a week the solenoid has to be defective.

Thanks,

They had a washer on hand today so I went home and tried it out. It didn't work. Since I wasn't sure which part was which I didn't know which I should try to change out. I didn't want to purchase both again if I didn't have to. I guess I ruined the new solenoid by using it without a washer??? I don't see how the washer could make much of a differece except by backing the solenoid out of the trans a hair????

UPDATE:

I changed out the solenoid for the second time...This time including the washer....no change. Should I change out the housing again now that I have the washer?

Thanks,

No the black housing is an electromagnet, it actives the solenoid, it is not part of the oil curict, the solenoid is. Since you could not find the old washer, it may be stuck to the case; we have two washers instead of one. Remove the new solenoid and the new washer look at the case were the washer sits, the old washer could be stuck to the case, carefully pry it off and reinstall the new solenoid with one washer. drive the car with the wire to the soleniod deconnected.

Good luck

ok I have now replaced both parts for the second time and there is a washer in place at the moment... The car is still shifting strange and it seems to happen most when the car is warm. Any ideas where to go from here?

I have given up....

on mine. The solenoid made no difference, and yes, mine is exactly the same way--she won't act up at all unless it's quite hot. Anybody want a nice old 300E with cold air, new pads, shift bushings, recent radiator, compressor clutch, and oh yeah, a new kickdown solenoid--cheap?

allen,

I talk to a tech at the local MB dealership. He said with the symptoms I'm having it would be the kickdown solenoid, the switch, the bowden cable out of adjustment or the valve body in the trans. We've tried everything but the valve body. He seems to think we may be able to flush the valve body out and it may cure the problem. I'll let you know what happens, it goes in the shop on Moday...

Brandon,

The next step is to check governor pressure while driving the car with a gauge. If the flush does not help, let me know and I will post the procedure.

Allen, has Richard looked at this car for you? Send me a PM about the price if you're serious about selling it.
