Vibration

I have 1989 190 D 2.5 5 speed manual I have changed 1 engine mount o/s looked ok also changed flexi disc unable to change vibration damper none available. the vibration experieced has increased. I went to a prop balanceing engineer he recons that the vibration damper wouln't cause that much problem and that the most likely problem is that the Engine/gearbox is not aligned properly with the prop shaft how can I check/ adjust
I think I should have changed all of the mounts not that expensive

Thanks in advance Vince

Have you eliminated the tires/wheels/suspension as a possibility?

You seem certain that this is a drivetrain vibration and not a rotational vibration from the tires or wheels.

Changing one motor mount will raise that side of the engine, redistibuting more weight onto the other, presumably collapsed, remaining mount. You will thus couple vibration and noise more strongly through that mount. You will also change the inherent torque axis of the tranny output into misalignment with the propeller shaft, and could notice some problems there.

It's somewhere between difficult and impossible to diagnose a vibration over the internet. It's hard to describe and impossible to feel.

That said, assuming it is indeed a driveshaft vibration, it is common for the single u-joint to wear in a very specific spot. To move the rotational location of the pins in the u-joint. Loosen the carrier bearing mount bolt on the drivers side and remove the bolt on the passenger side. Place two washers between the mount and the body and put the bolt back through and tighten both.

This will sometimes erase such a vibration. It costs nothing to try.

If it is NOT at driveshaft speed, then rotate tires front to rear and see if it changes.

Good luck,
