'91 Euro 500SEL W126 with 116k miles. Can anyone advise the procedure to replace the timing chain. Job will be done by an experienced diesel mechanic with no MB V8 history. Thanks.

Be sure to use the OE rails and tensioner. Replace the chain, sprockets, and rails and tensioner. Anything less and it might break.

Thanks. Will take your advise on the parts. Any tricks of the trade advise on the job itself? This mechanic replaced a chain for me before on a '91 300D. He simply attached the new chain to the old one and pulled it through.

Wind 'er on and wind 'er off!
It's a 2 man job 1 to turn eng and 1 to feed. Be aware ... that the camshafts will jump .....if you ain't got a tight grip on the chain........... |

It has often been advised to remove the rocker arms and spark plugs to eliminate tension so the crank will easily turn without the chain jumping. Be sure to reinstall the same rocker for each lobe.

Should you replace the chain without replacing the gears and tensioners/etc.?
