Questions for E320 owners...
I'm thinking about selling my 300E sedan and Chevy truck after I get married and getting a 94-96 E320 wagon (avoiding '93 as I heard this was a bad year).
I gather the worst things to look out for with the 104 engine are head gasket and wiring harness. couple of questions though: does the E320 wagon have self-levelling suspension like the 300TE? and does it also have the cat converter 'warm up' period (couple mins after start b4 it'll shift out of low gear)? Any other info/advice appreciated. thanks.

'95 E320 wagon
Yes, the wagon has SLS and the cat converter warm-up period, however, I don't know what the time period is. I do know that it will shift to 2nd gear at ~3000 RPM regardless. Obviously, wait for your engine to come up to operating temp. before hitting redline.

Nothing wrong with the '93 wagon. It's badged a 300TE, has the same m104 engine as the '94&95 wagons, but not the updated appearance. Otherwise, it's identical. The '92 and earlier cars have the m103 engine. Probably best to avoid the 4-matic regardless of which year you choose.
There was no '96 or '97 model year wagon in the U.S. You can get a '95 124 chassis wagon or a '98 210 chassis wagon. - JimY |

I am on my 3rd E series, 1986, 1989, and now a 1994 with 108k. This one is very nice to drive, I don't see how the engine is any better than the earlier one as performance is about the same and the maintenance problems are the same ( water pumps at 100k, plugged EGR at 105k, bad motor mounts at about 80k) Having the dealer pull the history when I purchaced showed the head gasket repair at 20K. No other complaints.

However, both M103's and M104's have the same head gasket leak problems, as well as at the area where the timing chain cover seals at the head. However, the last updated head gasket is fine, and apparently doesn't leak due to metal inserts in the gasket. Also, there is no difference between the reliability of 1993 300TE's and 1994-1995 E320. As pointed out above, the only differences are exterior. The later "E320" badged wagons have the exterior updates. The interior updates happened in the 1993 model year, so '94-'95s remain unchanged.
