well just out of curiousity...
i awoke my s500 today after a 6 month slumber.changed oil and filter and warmed uo for 5 mins.while i was on the highway it seemed that my instantaneous mpg was higher than i remember while i had it on cruise.what does your s-class read in instantaneous mpg when your s-class is going 60mph or 100km/hr on a steady road?
another thing, when i initially took it out the tranny had a hard time going into 4th gear and at first it would make a chirp sound as it went into 4th.i know this isn't normal but what does it indicate-if anything.remember the car was idle for some time.i haven't done a tranny fluid change in some time but it was on the list of chores this year.is my tranny cooked?is this why my mpg is higher than i remember?

Did the tranny eventually get to normal behavior? Might it simply have been a bit of dryness from disuse?

yes cbdo it did return to 'normal' after 15-20 mins but now because of the instantaneous guage i'm not too sure if it is indeed okay.i thought when i did 100kph my reading was approx 8-9 mpg but now it's reading 10-10.5.plugs are new , air filters are new and oil is new.

Until someone who actually knows the S Class gets in the room, I'll respond!
If the tranny otherwise behaves normally, I can't think of any bad things that would *increase* mileage. Nothing's slipping and whatever lockup mechanisms exist are working correctly. I'd expect you're seeing a)an effect of new plugs etc., b)an effect of whatever ambient conditions exist (as an example, my Saab loses a mile or two in cold weather compared to warm), c)something else equally benign that we haven't hit on yet, or d)the result of a quirky memory, as indeed we all have. We who become owned by these vehicles do adapt; MBs function so precisely that we expect any deviation to be significant. One of the interesting things my MB has done to me is that when driving it my attention is caught by things I'd ignore in any other car I've had!
