Spin the rotor with the pads out. If it turns smoothly, with minimal sound and no roughness or grinding, try to pull it staight out on the spindle, then push back. If there is no discrenable motion (and no thump), they are fine.
Repacking doesn't REQUIRE a dial indicator, but it is the best way. Unless they grind or have excessive play, I'd personally leave them along until you get to the milage specified to repack them. Peter
