brake question

i took my car in for an alignment today, and the guy said my brakes need to be done in a few thousand miles. he told me on benzes when you change the brake pads you have to change the rotors also....i have never heard of such a thing unless they can not be turned because of the thickness. is there any truth to this? and if so, what rotors should i invest in, or should i spend the money for a big brake kit?

cheers

Aaron
