1992 400E service

Hi there - I own a 92 400E that has just turned 100,000 miles. I am the second owner and have stamps up to the 60,000 mile service. I am going to have the car serviced, and was wondering if there was anything I should have done in terms of preventive maintenance beyond what is required for the 90,000 mile service. Any input anyone may have would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

A really cautious person would consider a new chain and some or all of the guide rails at 100K miles. That's a couple of hundred for a new chain or a couple of thousand for all new guide rails. A reasonable person would wait for 150K miles.

Depending on when last done, consider:

- transmission fluid and filter change
- power steering fluid and filter change
- brake fluid change
- does your car have cabin air filters?

My 92 400E has about 200k miles. At 100k, if well maintained with regular oil changes I would not recommend anything out of the ordinary. I waited until 190k to get a timing chain and guide rails. This was "just in time" I was told. I would agree with the recommendation that you do that at about 150k.

Early failures were engine wiring harness and power steering pump leakage. These are very common on this model.

Between 150 and 200k I had the tranny rebuilt, replaced the radiator, water pump as well as the timing chain and rails.

That was a lot, I admit, but the car is still great and I'm confident that it will perform well for the next 100k without anything major.
