Cold start problem

Hi again,

Well, i'm almost giving up on my 1997 C36 but I give it a shot before I sell her.

On cold starts, the car takes a few turns to start and when it does, the idles gos to like 1200 rpm (normal since it's a cold start) but for a slpit second all the lights dim. Then quickly the idle settles to 800 or so and a few seconds after that it does down to 650 or so.

As well, when i accelerate, I hear a whirring sound from the engine but after it warms up a bit the whirring gooes away. NO check eingine codes and I still haven't solved mt previous problems.

My mech said it's the throttle actuator.

I changed the plugs and the iginition wires, not the coil ones, was freyed and broken and one had orange rust loooking stuff on it. I didn't change them as the MB parts shop was closed. The mechanic said they are fine and not to worry about them.
any ideas?

thank you
rocky

M104s have whiney oil pumps when cold. Damn near everyone I've heard over 10K does this. Add the air pump racket to that and they are just loud when cold.

Try taking your EA and cleaning the fool out of it with a rag and carb cleaner, then lude the linkage and shafts with a good penetrating oil.

Thanks guys.

It's weird though..the car runs perfectly fine after 1-2 minutes of warmup. Once in awhile I would get a 'electrical hiccup' and all the lights and everthing in the car dims for a splut second..almost like when the fan angages or soemthing, it causes a spike.

last night after getting out of the train station, the car started up perfect like before. This monring it was same symptoms again.

The actuator is an expensive part.

BTW, whats an 'EA'?

Update:

I think I found my problem.

While searching for vacuum line leaks, I took a peak at the throttle butterfly plate. With the car off, it doesn tno close off the opening but sits at an angle...about 30 degree or so. I'm pretty sure thew butterfly should be at a fully closed position..I think.

Now..the question is, do I need a whole throttle assembly?

What did I say? Don't buy a new throttle housing untill you have pulled out the old and cleaned it properly with carby cleaner.

Yup...cleaned it and check light came on and off the next day.

I'm thinking it's a fuel pressure prob now.
