300E Bad Fan Clutch???
Hi Everyone!
Two days ago I purchased a 1986 300E. I test drove it during the night and it ran great so I bought it. I drove it home no problem. The next night I drove it around showing off my new ride, no problem. Today, is a new story. It drove fine in morning traffic but during our lunch hour traffic, it makes this loud obnoxious squeaking noise from the front of the engine. I get into my parking garage at the office and everyone covers thier ears because it is so loud. I go to the drugstore in town and purchase WD40. A hour has passed and I start the engine thinking I am going to spray where the squeaking is coming from. There is no squeaking. After about 10 minutes of running the car, the engine temp gets to about 100 degrees and low and behold, here comes the squeaking sound. I spray the tensioner area because that is where I though the noise was coming from. Of course the tensioner is burried so who knows what I hit right? It got a little quieter but still squeaking. Then I took the shotgun approach, spray everything. The part I sprayed that made the squeaking go away was the fan clutch area. Does anyone know if a bad fan clutch will make a really bad obnoxious squeaking sound. I mean really loud too. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Aloha, Eric |

Sounds like your fan clutch bearing bracket is bad.
It is an aluminum bracket with a bearing and hub that the clutch and fan mount to. |
