Question 97 E420 how to remove the alternator???

97 E420 -- Battery tests out fine, but is not getting charged. Basically the car ran until the battery went dead. Swapped batteries to get the car home. The Battery Charge indicator message shows on control panel.
Appears to be the alternator.

As of 5/06, I replaced the regulator and the Battery charge indicator has not gone away (battery is fully charged).

1.) How do you remove the alternator? the space is so tight that I cannot get it out. It appears there is no space in front of the engine and the oil filter is blocking the alternator from coming through the bottom/back way.

2.) Is this is common problem with the E420?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!
