Only the left rear window does not operate. Neither switch works.
It seems the windows are fused in pairs (LF/RR, RF/LR), which implies that the circuit is good up until some point. Does each window still get its own relay? Where should I start?

I am not too sure about your car but have you checked the wires in the door frame/mount? Maybe they are worn out or cut or something....
I would start there......... Iggy

csnow,
glad to hear everything started working again. Hopefullly the problem doesn't resurface. If it does, start with the simple stuff switch, fuse, connections. Then the DIY stuff. jayb79 do a search on this forum. Power windows are usually simple to fix. Majority of the time it's the switch, motor, regulator, regulator guide. Good luck.

thanks for the info. it looks like i need to pull the switch and check for volts. There is no indication of a load when i push the switch, so i don't think its mechanical.

Since purchasing my '87 300TD I have had to pull, clean and lightly adjust all four of the window switches. I recently noticed my right rear is acting up again. When I rock the switch back-n-forth it will eventually move the window up and down. It has done it before and probably indicates the shaped spring in the switch is not allowing the ball to act correctly and should be replaced. I hate to replace when I can adjust so . . . Post what you find.

IT WAS BROKEN WIRES!
I pulled the door panel (used the search for that one)and the motor was sounding like it was trying to work.
1st- I found the 2 wires leading to the motor from the switch and jumped them direct to 12v battery. it was pulling amps and trying to work so i figured it was mechanical. 2nd-I managed to get the motor off of the regulator and it started working, so i lubed everything up and thought i was done. put the panel back on put the window down and it would not come back up. 3rd- Pull the regulator assy out. This is much easier than taking the motor off. With the window about 2 thirds of the way down remove the black clip that holds the slide in place, then take off 3 nuts at the motor and 2 bolts from the track 1 top, 1 bottom, i used an 18mm wrench to hold the window up while pulling the regulator thru the big hole at the bottom of the door. So now i am thinking the motor is jaming up and i adjust the screw at the end of the worm gear, all works good on the bench. Thinking this is the fix i put everything back together, put the panel on and get the same problem when i put the window down it won't go back up. 4th-Now i am getting good at taking the door apart i can pull the panel off and remove the regulator in about 2 mins.(practice practice practice). This time i take the motor apart(i love the mercedes stuff everything is screwed together no rivits or crimping)everything looks good other then a rusty worm gear,so i relube everything and put it all back together. Same as above still not working. 5th- Refering to a previous post about bad wires i pull the wires from the door and sure enough all put one of them are broken. i cut out about 6 inches of wire so the splice is not were the wires broke before and it all works fine now. What a waist of a day. But i am glad i didn't have to pay to get it done.

That's great to hear. You saved yourself hundreds of dollars. Doesn't it feel good to fix your car yourself? Now that you know how to remove everything on your door quickly you'll save money if you ever have to "go back in" to fix something. jrmd01@yahoo.com
