jacking up car question...

Hi All,

I'm planning on doing a complete brake job this weekend. I'm wondering where can I place jack stands underneath the car since I'm using the hydraulic jack on the padded hard points near the fender...

thanks,

well i use both a jack [i have several floor jacks] and then i put a jack stand under the unibody frame. that is the rail running from the front to the back about 12 inches in from the sides.

if i am going to be under the car i use ramps all the way around.

work safe!

Lift the center of the car (crossmember in front or diff in rear) and put the stands under the rubber pads.

After reading posts on where to jack up the front of the car so you could put your jack stands under the pads, I could not find the front crossmember everybody was talking about.

Doh! The cross member was covered by the engine splash pan.

I use a piece of wood and lift the differential in the back.

Just remember, a jack is a jack, not a jack stand. Use your jack to lift the car, but put stands under it and _never_ rely on the jack to support your car when you are under it.

Don’t use the differential as a jacking point. You’ll be putting undue stress on the “soft” mounts. It’s not designed to withstand the weight of the car from underneath.

I jack my Volvo from the differential -- but it has a solid rear axle.

Tomorrow

It's a hassle to jack the vehicle up and place RAMPS under each
wheel...but you will never regret the small extra effort.

Hmmm. 940T! I'm going to have to get one of those. I miss my departed 740T. I need to dump my 960.

Please follow the advice regarding floor jacks and jack stands-

This is rather horrible, but at a wrecking yard that I frequent, a service person was killed recently by relying on a floor jack to "quickly check under" a mobile lift. The jack was rated to lift the unit but the floor jack had a sudden seal burst. No one knows why.

According to the workers there, everyone frantically tried to raise the unit but it was too late.

Only use a floor jack to lift- don't rely on them.

Hey Warren. Greetings from another fellow BrickBoarder. Yeah, gotta love the 945T. I lovingly refer to it as my Swedish truck -- it's actually, my wife's. It is a great car -- for completely different reasons than my Benz.
