My 1980 300 SD is idling too fast. The tachometer reads a little over 1000 RPM. What is the proper way to adjust the idle speed on this engine?

To adjust idle speed: There is an adjustment screw in the side of the pump next to the engine. Loosen the lock nut and turn the screw out to decrease idle speed. After adjustment, tighten lock screw. To smooth out idle adjust the damper screw at the back of the pump.Good luck. Bill Lewallen- Lex. Ky.
