Transmission problems...

My recently bought Mercedes 1996 C220 has a problem with the transmission being clunky. The oil level seems to be ok. The car lunges forward and the gear engages after a delay even with the brakes applied. The engine idles at 800 rpm . Is the rpm high?
The gear shift is very evident when accelerating. Is there a cheap remedy for this problem..?? Also the engine has a clattering sound . Is some pump worn out..??

The engine should idle at 650-700 RPM, in or out of gear. IF the idle speed is too high(800) then you will have a harsh engagement
Have the trans pan removed & fluid/filter replaced. IF the trans still shifts too hard then a modulator pressure check & adjustment is in order.

Hi

I am new to the forums, I have a 99 CLK430 and have a similar problem , when coming to a stop (while the transmission downshift) I hear a clunking sound also when coming to a rolling stop but not completely stopping and accelerating again i hear a clunking sound is like is flaring it takes a second for the gears to engage, it also has some flearing when slowing down on corners and accelerating.

I recently switched the transmissionfrom S to W and the problems do not seems as bad less flearing and not much clunking. The dealer looked at the car charged me 200.00 dollars to tell me that there were no errors reported by computer, oil level was ok and that it might be an internal problem 4800.00 for a new tranny and module (I'm in the military haha we don't make that kind of money) anyway would changing the fluid and filter a good idea and if it does not correct the problem what is my next step, thanks a bunch in advance for any suggestion

Also what would I need and where to purchase, as well as torque specs for the tranny bolts thank you.

neonfix,
You should start a new thread as you car has fully electronic transmission & the 1996 C220 is a fully mechanical one.

However, you should change the fluid & filter before making any judgement on the trans shift quality. You will need 8 L of special fluid # 001-989-21-03-10, filter & pan gasket.

Hello Perinchery,
High idle and hard gear shift at the same time indicates a likely "false air" problem of the intake manifold. Under this condition the modulator valve is applied with a lower vacuum, believing the engine is under a higher load thus performing a harder gear shift.
All the best and good luck.
Dokta
