Level control progress, and question...300TD

Verified that the level control works by disconnecting adjustment link and moving lever up (car would raise) and moving lever down )car would drop). The problem is that the adjustment link, when adjusted as small as possible, is not quite short enough to properly move lever of level control to correct position to raise the car. That tells me that the lever was unclamped and rotated on the knurled shaft of level controller. If I change the position of the lever on the shaft, then I can achieve the proper height adjustment flexibility. Seems simple, however I have seen in two different places in shop manual where it says not to move that. "A subsequent location of lever in relation to control shaft is not possible". Can't I move the lever on the knurled shaft?
Actually used the car for the first time today. Except for the backend dragging and the horribly slipping tranny, all went OK.
Beginning to like this car. I imagine one that will actually go from gear to gear is really a pleasure.
