C230 Brake help

I saw the brake job for the E320 listed in the DIY section. Is the C230 front brake pad replacement about the same? Thanks for any help or advice.

is your C class a 1998? if it is things are different, the caliper is removed by removing two caliper guide pin bolts.
It is an easy job if you have ever done pads before.

The 1998 C-230 is an incredibly easy car to maintain for the DIY'er, and the Haynes manual 3511 (euro edition ) is a great companion for U.S cars.

1998 C230. Could you explain just how easy it is to replace the front brake pads? Thanks a lot.

you know that MB discs get replaced and not turned? and MB discs are inexpensive ( i think - but not certain of actual thickness - that minimum disc thickness is 10mm maybe even 10.5mm)

to change pads:

remove wheel ( have the alignment pin that fits into hub holes for replacing wheel.)

you will probably have a wear sensor that needs to be detached, (electrical connection with wire extending off it)

next remove both caliper guide pin bolts, the caliper will pull out, hang caliper with a string or wire, don't let caliper hang buy the brake hose. when re-insatlling these bolts torque to 18 lbf ft. ( you will also see the bolts that attach caliper mounting bracket to steering knuckle - these are not removed unless discs are being exchanged.)

pull out pads and take care to see how accompanying heat shields and backing plates are attached

use brake cleaner and a small wire- stiff brush to clean backing plates and surfaces that pads rest on. be sure to clean off all the old threadlocker in the caliper mounting holes if you have the right tools ( correct size tap, or long thin wire brush )
when reinstalling pads, you will need to remove top of brake reservior in engine compartment and use a big C-clamp to press piston back into caliper - making sure rubber components are not twisted or torn. ( I like to smear silicon paste on all rubber gaiters )

place brake grease on back of pads ( don't get any on pad friction surface ) put pads into caliper mountng bracket up against discs, refit wear sensor and anti-rattle hardware

pivot caliper down into position over pads
install guide pin bolts - buy new ones, or see if new guide pin bolts come with new OEM brake pads

when everything is back together and wheel is attached, pump brakes a few time until pads puch up against discs.

brake in the new pads buy accelerating to twenty mph then braking to 10mph and relaesa brakes while coasting to cool down pads, do this at forty mph abot 10 more times, each time slowing down to around 10 mph and releasing brake and coasting then acclerating for a few hundred feet to cool brakes ( do a search for brake pad brake in procedure )

let me know how things go, also many local libraries have acccess to Alldata repair manuals through computer stations - find out
