94 E320 wagon rear hatch shock problem

I replaced two rear hatch shocks 2 years ago with no problem. I now removed and installed a replacement. I installed the rear bolt and cannot for the life of me raise the rear hatch high enough to line up the front bolt. Can the shock be compressed somehow? Help!
thank You

Solved the mystery1

I took out the shock and put it in a bearing press and compressed it about two inches and then reinstalled it. It seem too have been hyper extended and it aligned right up.
