odor into cabin w/ recirc on...help?

When the recirc button is on, air from the outside should not be able to come in right? If so, what's the problem?

A/C is broken but I still use the middle (bi-level) button.

thanks,

There are 2 vacuum actuators that close the flap to cut off outside air. If one or both actuators are shot or if the actuators are not getting the vacuum feed (so to speak), recirc won't function.

Or you have a window open

If your car is similar in the AC design as my 88 190e, I think that it is, then to get to the actuators you need to take apart the dash. Very intensive work!!!

You may want to check the steering boot; mine is shot and a nice stinky undercar breeze eminates from the nether regions of the dash unless the ac is on normal. Mine is readily visible from the top of the car (under the hood) where the steering shaft passes through the firewall.
