Fixed Stuck Gas Cap

Wife told me today she couldn't get the gas cap to go back on correctly on the E320 wagon. I fooled with it and couldn't figure it out either. I searched and searched the forum notes and couldn't find anything useful. Finally I stumbled into Fastland and found the picture shown below. The picture showed me just what was wrong... somehow the plastic tabs and their metal prongs had spun out of alignment. I sprayed a little lube on the sucker, turn it upside down and held the handle in my vice, used pliers and small screw driver to hold up the metal prongs, and was able to use a free finger to spin the plastic part back into place. Hope this helps someone. Best,

Mine on the '94 wagon did that. What will happen next is that you'll pull up to a pump to gas up and you won't be able to get the cap off. Buy a new one as soon as you can. Once the plastic piece comes loose, it become unpredictable.

Or, you can just replace all of your caps. I see them sold on ebay as a set quite often. Check this out...

OH, thanks man! If that damn thing got stuck on, I'd never hear the end of it.

The funny thing is, because the original gas cap was starting to corrode, I bought the now loose one from the dealer about a year ago. He had the metal-backed one (as shown in the picture above) and the original looking, plastic-backed one, which I bought. Any opinions on...

- which version is better, the metal-backed or plastic-backed
- how to avoid this type of problem in the future

Thanks again and best regards,

The one pictured above is the correct one for your car. I have that one on my 94 E420 and have absolutely no problems.

You may want to "CAREFULLY" clean the rim where the gas cap gasket touches the gas tank.
