Hello again,

Something I forgot to mention in my last post, when I start my engine from cold I can hear a tapping or knocking noise for about 10 seconds, then it stops. This doesn't bother me, I'm just a bit worried it may turn into something bad.

Thank you everyone for all your help!

Oliver

could it be the air pump going? This engages for about the first 10 seconds. It is pretty big and it costs about $1,000 US to fix new.

could it be the hydraulic valve lifters readjusting themselves?

during the first few seconds of startup, if the hydraulic valve lifter reservoirs are not full, they automatically readjust, and before this is done, there is some play with the valve tappets, resulting in the tapping noise.

i believe this is normal.

Does this mean there might be nothing to worry about??

I hope so! If you read my last posts you will see i'm not having much luck at the moment!
I have just smashed a headlamp, my a/c runs warm and my car wobbles and stalls about once a week when it is idle.

Aaaaggghhhh!!!!

Changing the subject totally, is it easy to change the oil, plugs and filters yourself??

Thanks

Oliver

Sorry about your luck, mate, and let's hope it's just the hydraulic lifters "pumping up."

My independent Audi shop has published this as "usual" for Audi engines with +100k mi or so, and that it does not present a problem.

A LOT of years ago, I listened to valves by holding a stick against the valve cover and putting my ear up to the end. There was a wonderfully different sound, and the solid lifters made a sewing-machine like clicking, quite mechanincal. I suppose now you could use a stethoscope...

Anyway, is it possible for you to poke under the hood (bonnet?) when the car is started, and isolate the sounds to either the valve train, or the vacuum pump area? This may help the diagnosis.

Best of luck.

I would have a look, but i'm not too sure how to describe where the noise is coming from because my technical knowledge means i could only say it's 'coming from the front of the engine!'.
It does sound like a sewing machine kind of ticking though, and the car has done 130,000 miles.
I think i'm just starting to notice little things, and come to the conclusion something is wrong because of the luck i'm having at the moment.

Thanks for all the help, i'll keep you up to date if the engine blows up or something.

Thanks

Oliver

You still might try the look/see. If the noise is from the front of the engine, where the belts are, it could be a pump. If the noise is more from the top, it could be the hydraulic lifters, as this is where the gap will be audible. You could always get the local mechanic to lend a trained ear, too.

If it's making noises it's running

I have just this second got on the phone to my garage, and I am taking the car in on Monday. I have asked them to fix all my steering problems, window problem, a/c problems, headlamp and anything else they can 'mysteriously' find!!

Thanks for your help. I think I should leave all the tinkering about to the people in the garage, just incase i break something!

Thanks again, you are all very helpful!!

Becareful when you say "anything mysterious".
If the mechanic isn't trustworthy he will find mysterious things. I own a 1986 300E (192k mis.) and it to will make this tapping noise when first started cold. It does go away immediately, had it checked out and it was the lifters, not lubricated well when started cold.

My '87 190E (123K miles) does this also for a short while after a cold start, but not always - usually worse if I've left the car unused for more than a couple of days. I also believe it is just the hydraulic tappets sorting themselves out - not much to worry about as it soon goes quiet!

I would tend to agree with Mo, with your luck this past week Oliver, another pile of bills is the last thing you need ! My '93 190e has the same knocking cum tapping from the engine and has done for the past 70000 kms. At first, about a week after I first bought the car, I was mortified and had visions of an engine rebuild on the driveway. I took it to the local 'experts' who told me not to worry, it was the hydraulic tappets filling with oil. It will still do it occasionally and the engine has come to no harm as a result of the tapping. If you can live it, I certainly would if I were you, providing you can satisfy yourself it is in fact the tappets !

My 93 190E has some rattling/growling noise coming from somewhere below when cold as well. Doesn't seem to be the engine as there is no noise when I revv the engine when stationery. The noise seem only audible above 2000rpm and will remain for 5-10 min when driving from cold. Any ideas please.

I get some growling from down under gearshift area also - my guess is cold transmission getting itself lubed up as it sounds like dry gear teeth engaging and disengaging. However, the growl goes away within the first half-mile and is not getting any louder or lasting any longer (ie: getting worse).

I'm interested if any techs might know what this is, specifically. It's definately a linear-movement thing, noticeable at lower revs and keeps up with transmission speeds (not engine rpms).

1993 190 2.6 72k miles

Thank you.
