Is it wrong to err higher on ATF, Brake Fluid Spec/Grade?
Is it wrong to err higher on ATF, Brake Fluid Spec/Grade?
If I use, say ATF Dexron Mercon III on an 87 300D vice ATF regular, am I headed for damage or a transmission rebuild? Likewise, I rebuilt my whole 87 300D brake system. I used DOT 4 vice DOT 3. I know you shouldnt take Fluid specs lightly. I once ruined a 240D transmission (manual) by using Gear Oil vice ATF Any advice? My understanding is that Mercon/Dextron III supercedes Mercon/Dextron II standards, so the new stuff could only be better.
This is assuming your tranny calls for Mercon/Dextron II, of course. Besides, I do not think they sell "II" anymore. On the brake fluid, I always upgrade to DOT4, and have never had a problem. The boiling point is higher, and the moisture absorbtion potential is lower. Some owner's manuals continue to insist upon DOT 3. Could be a reason for this, but I am not aware of any. Avoid DOT5, since that is a whole other matter, and not compatible.
