Is it wrong to err higher on ATF, Brake Fluid Spec/Grade?

Is it wrong to err higher on ATF, Brake Fluid Spec/Grade?
If I use, say ATF Dexron Mercon III on an 87 300D vice ATF regular, am I headed for damage or a transmission rebuild?

Likewise, I rebuilt my whole 87 300D brake system. I used DOT 4 vice DOT 3.

I know you shouldnt take Fluid specs lightly. I once ruined a 240D transmission (manual) by using Gear Oil vice ATF

Any advice?
