headlight assembly or [lens + rim]? 1992 W124. + bulb question

What I need are just lens (the clear glass) and rim (the clear plastic for foglight) on the right.

$52.94 + $89.73 = $142.67

If I buy the whole assembly for right side, it is $189.54.

(this picture is for left)

Do you recommend the assembly? What is the advantage of buying the whole assembly?

===============
Another separate question.

I have 1992 US versiong lighting. Not Euro version.

Which set of bulbs do you recommend?
Which lasts long? How brigher are the expensive bulbs?

H-3 55 W Osram / Sylvania $4.53 / each
9004 Osram / Sylvania $ 6.63 /each

H-3 Sylvania SilverStar $22.49 /each
9004 Sylvania SilverStar $44.98 /pair

H-3 55w=110w PIAA Extreme white $54.95 / pair
9004 55/65w = 95/120w PIAA Extreme White Plus $74.95 / pair

I just called PIAA. She said they offer 1-year warranty.

I also talked to her that Sylvania claims that their SilverStar is brighter than PIAA. But she said PIAA is brigher.

She said PIAA will last 2~3 years in typical usage. While Sylvania says SilverStar will typically last 1 year.

I called Sylvania and asked about their claim that SilverStar is brighter than PIAA. I asked her which model was compared: PIAA Extreme White or PIAA Platinum Super White or other model? She said she could not answer.

The only benefit that I can think of in buying a whole new assembly, versus replacing the lenses, is that your existing headlight frame could have brittle plastic that will break off when replacing the lenses. This happened on one lens retaining tab on my 1995 E420 (different lights), and may not be an issue for your 1992 lights.

I installed Osram +50% bulbs - I believe that they were $30 for the pair. They are supposedly the brightest bulbs you can buy, and I can definitely see a big improvement over the stock bulbs. These are the brightest bulbs you can get without going to "overwattage" bulbs - which run the risk of melting your reflectors and bruning up your wiring.

Stay away form the PIAA bulbs - I've heard that they're overpriced and not worth the $.

Hope this helps.

1) My inclination is to go the cheaper route, as long as my current assembly was in good condition (plastic is all intact w/o cracks, electrical connections clean, fits securely, etc.)

2) Depends on what you're going after. Stock look, get the normal Sylvania bulbs. If you want the "whiter & brighter look" the Silverstars are pretty good, and a good deal compared to the PIAA's IMO.

Where do you have your light checked and adjusted after bulb replacement?

According to MB Service CD, I need 10 meters flat ground. In my town, it is hard to find such place. All streets are bent up or down.

What is this mean? Condensor?

===MB service CD
Note
When removing the right-hand headlamp unit on vehicles with double auxilary fan, remove the flat springs upward and push the radiator with condensor back slightly.

the best way to repair it is to take both sides off, and get some euro's on the sucker.
