Instructions on Transmission Oil replacement
Some questions (car is a 1984 380SE):
1) Is there any value to the Transmission Flush service offered at many shops ? 2) If I wanted to drain the Torque converter also, how much Tranny Oil would I need ? Thanks, Amit |

The problem with those flushings is your dirty filter is left in the transmission. As for the procedure to do it yourself, you will need a 5mm hex bit (allen key) for the transmission drainplug. This is the same size that will be needed for the torque converter drainplug. To get the torque converter drainplug to line up with the opening in the bellhousing either you'll get lucky when you shut the engine off, or you'll have to put socket on the crank pulley bolt and turn the engine until it lines up. Once you have the fluid drained from the pan, remove the pan and filter (phillips screw driver). Put on the new filter and gasket, be sure to not overtighten the pan bolts. Put in about 4 quarts of ATF, start engine and cycle the gear lever through each gear, pausing at each for a couple of seconds. Check fluid level with engine running, add as needed. I am not sure of how much your tranny takes. I have the 722.315 tranny and it takes 6.5 quarts.
