Question Stop the shaking

As a newby to the forum, I'm looking for help on an issue with my 1984 300 Turbodiesel. I have two questions:

1. and the easy one; what is the top speed on this car? Shortly after I got the car about 18 months ago, I found that the Diff. was the source of some noise and I had one exchanged with an used one. The noise stopped, but I suspect that I got an incorrect Diff. installed.

My 1985 300 SD which has CA emission controls gets 23mpg, top speed about 115 mph with lower RPM's per speed as compared to the 84.

The 84, has no polution controls and since the rear Diff. change-out only gives me a consistent 20mpg. I did not check the fuel consumption before the diff change, since my son drove the car. The engine RPM's per speed are higher then on the SD and the torque, especially felt when shifting into 2nd gear. My top speed is at close to 4300 RPM about 105 mph.

Question: Do you think I have the wrong Diff?

2. The "boner":
Ever since I have the car, it has a shaking problem, 90% of the time whilst stoopped at a red light and engine warm. The shaking feels like the engine wants to come loose and is very hard on the engine and tranny-mounts, which I have already replaced once. Needless to say, my wife is not too happy to use the car and been watched doing the shakes during stops.
I had shops look at it, they loosened each injector while running, tried to increase the idling speed as much as possible, no clues.
On many occasions, when I am stopped at a light, I can stop the shaking (nearly) by shifting into neutral, or increasing the idle speed through the footpedal, and braking at the same time.

The car runs fine otherwise, 270K miles on it doing 60 plus miles a day. Original engine and transmission, no leaaks after leak repairs a year ago. Anybody out there with some thoughts?

My wifes 300D Turbo shakes like the motor is going to jump out of the car as it comes to a stop at a light. Once we actually get to a stop it smooths quite a bit. Her Tach isn't working so I'm not sure if it just idles to slow when braking. One of those things on the list to take care of.

When was the last valve adjustment done?
Are the engine mounts original? If they are their probably due. Top speed sounds about right, are your fuel filters and air filter fresh?

Try posting this in the diesel forum. Their seems to be nothing they don't know about these over their.

Describe the "shaking" does it sound like it's missing? Or does it sound normal and just shake?

Since you have already replaced the motor mounts, tighten the rack dampner (do a search), then engine shocks.
Thanks

Hatterasguy - Last valve adjustment 24K miles ago. Right after the adjustment the shaking was discussed with the shop. Fuel and air filtrers are changed / cleaned regularily and can be ruled out as the cause.

What mpg do same model cars get? My bigger 300SD with pollution control has 15% better fuel performance.

Valve adjustments are due every 15k, I'm not sure of what is causing the problem, my SDL (different engine) shakes when I first start it because it skips. Try re-posting in the diesel section they might be able to offer more help.

I'll bet you need your rack dampner replaced. It is around $40.00. (I think). Or you can try tightening your existing one and see if it helps. It is located on the back of the IP.
Thanks
David

Hi there!
The problem is well known at license built MB-engines from korea (MB100 Van and Ssang Yong Musso Diesel/Turbo Diesel).
On these the delivery quantity of the IP varies between the individual cylinders, causing the shake in idle. It is not too common on german built OM617. The manufacturer of these engines (Ssang Yong) advises in these cases a lowering of the idle speed to 600rpm! It does really help the shake but boosts the vibration. So if injectors are OK and rack adjustment is made then that's what it is I fear. There are places though that rebuilt pumps.
All the best,
Dokta

Thanks all for your input, I moved the issue to the Tech section. I will follow up on the valve adjustment and check on the rack damper suggestion.
