Proper way to hook up vacuum adjustment for headlights?
Hello:
I just got my hands on a vacuum adjust switch for my '82 300CD with Hella european headlights. I'm not really that anal retentive (OK, maybe a little), but I was wondering if anyone had an original euro car with the vacuum adjust that could tell me the proper way to route the vacuum lines. I know I could just tap into the vacuum source and run the lines anywhere convenient, but I'd like to do it right. Also, the vacuum switch has two connectors (labled 1 and 2). Which goes to the vacuum source, and which goes to the lights? Or does it matter? And what position (0-3) should the lights be in normally? IE, which position should I be in when I aim them? A little info on each position would actually be great... Thanks in advance!

I have seen a few cars that had these originally. I have seen two different routings. I have seen the line from the firewall go down the left fenderwell along the edge of the fender to a Y connector near the left light. The Y then allows the left front to be connected and then a line goes across through the core support to the right headlight.
The other routing I have seen, had the lines split under the dash with one going through the firewall and down the left fender to the left light and the other going through the firewall on the right side and going along the edge of the fender to the right light. I don't remember which connector on the switch gets the source and which goes to the light but it's easy enough to figure out through trial and error. If they don't work, just switch them. The idea behind this gadget is that you adjust the lights properly with the trunk empty. Then when the trunk is loaded and the lots go up to search for Possums, you pull down on the wheel to pull the lights down. I have not set mine up that way for my purposes. I adjust my lights normally in the lowest position, or the second from lowest position. Then when I'm on the dark, winding farm roads that I travel to reach the highway, I bump it up two notches to help see the deer and escaped livestock earlier. Then when I get to the highway I go back down two notches to keep from blinding the oncoming traffic. Good luck, |

Thanks for the reply. I think your method makes more sense for my purposes as well. Am I correct in assuming that the lower the number, the lower the lights aim?
Thanks again.
